Pickens Planters' diary, 1862-1864.

Diary, 1862-1864, traces the activities of Company B of the 40th Alabama Infantry Regiment, which served as part of the Army of Tennessee. E.D. Willett served as its captain until he was promoted major in 1864. Willett describes camp life beginning with enlistment activities at Demopolis (Ala.) and continuing on to the company's participation in the siege at Vicksburg (Miss.), the battles in Tennessee, including Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, and the final retreat of the Army of Tennessee into Georgia. The diary ends in 1864 after the company returns to Mobile and Blakeley in Alabama. Specifically Willett describes the physical condition of his soldiers and discusses in narrative the fate of individual soldiers, whether they were killed in battle, died of the measles, or went to a Northern prison. Particularly valuable are his lists of the company's personnel that include their physical characteristics, enlistment information, county of residence, and circumstances of their death. He also discusses in detail the Confederate and Federal troop movements at the various battles and illustrates army politics through his participation in a court martial committee. The diary ends with accounts of the company soldiers for food, clothing, and supplies.
